Every child is an artist...

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.
-Pablo Picasso

As part of my community service hours, I was able to work the Art Festival held at San Pedro High School. Schools from all over came to perform various skits, dances, songs, instruments and more. Many of the performances represented the country of Belize using local music, symbols and dance. One of my favorites was a the skit shown in this picture where performers were dressed as the National Symbols of Belize. It was a wonderful way to get a feel for the country and really allowed for a look at how Belizeans see themselves.

While I was able to enjoy a few of the performances, I was often working to hard to see many of the acts! Many of the local schools set up booths with food and drinks to earn money. My school, Isla Bonita, was selling baked goods and drinks. It was a wonderful experience being able to work side by side with the teachers of Isla Bonita serving and interacting with many of the locals. In the 5 hours I worked at the Art Festival, I was able to develop a clearer understanding of many parts of the culture as well as get really good with the money! This was an experience I feel will stay with me as I think back on my time in Belize.
